Niftier fifty from Canon

Canon has announced its EF 50mm F1.8 STM lens, which uses a stepper motor for quieter and more responsive autofocus compared to its “Mark II” predecessor.

The new “nifty fifty” also features a 7-blade circular aperture and minimum focus distance of 35cm – both improvements over the Mark II. The compact fifty is just 39mm long and weighs 160g, has a metal mount, and supports an optional integrated hood as well as 49mm filters.

While the predecessor Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk II sported stellar image quality, especially for its price, the build quality of the lens was like a cheap toy. The new lens seems to rectify the quality shortcomings.

The lens will be available later in May at a price of $129.99.
